Getting Around the Island
« on: June 12, 2026, 07:35:28 AM »
Birchwood Isle is a big island. It's also a big site. The purpose of this file is to help you find your way around Birchwood Isle -- both the island, for in-character purposes, and the site, for out-of-character purposes. Under the "island map" (below), you'll find a complete hierarchy of all the boards on the site to help you navigate it. Note that there is no drawn map of the island at this time.

Getting onto and off of the Island

First and foremost, you should understand that all adults and older adolescents coming to the island have been fully vetted before they are allowed to set foot on its shores. Once on the island, only adults over the age of 25 are allowed to leave the island of their own volition. Anyone under the age of 25 must receive prior authorization to leave the island, whether to attend university in another country or to visit another country with their family. Those under the age of 25 may only leave on their own to attend university. All adolescents and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for trips out of the country and must return with their parent or guardian when they return.

Exceptions may be made with admin authorization. For example, if you need to remove an adolescent or child character from play.

During the warmer months, a ferry transports groups of people (and their vehicles) to and from the island every day. The first ferry arrives on the island at six a.m. and leaves the island at 9 a.m. The second ferry arrives on the island at five p.m. and leave at eight p.m. The trip by ferry takes about five hours, give or take half an hour in either direction. Therefore, two different boats come and go from the island every day.

When the Atlantic Ocean is frozen during the colder months, there is no regular travel to and from the island. Therefore, the majority of people arrive on the island during the late spring through the early autumn. From late autumn through early spring, anyone wishing to arrive on or leave the island must charter a flight from the small municipal airport, which is maintained by the island's government. There are only a handful of pilots available on the island, and their prices may vary. Not everyone can afford to leave the island during the winter.

Note, however, that commercial flights bring supplies to the island during the cold months to ensure that the island continues to thrive and does not have to produce 100% of its products independently of other nation.

Getting Around the Island

The entire island is accessible by road, and therefore by motorized vehicle or bicycle. However, there are no highways on Birchwood Isle, which can make going from the Northern Isle to the Southern Isle time consuming (as the island is longer than it is wide). For this reason, there is an established rail system on the island. All rail is aboveground (i.e. no subways) with stops available to take you from the central isle to any of the four quadrants -- or from any quadrant to any other quadrant, for your convenience. This provides a transportation option for those who do not have access to a car and travel by road.

For reference, the following "Map" of the island, should be read like this:

  • Category
    • Board
      • Child Board
        • Topic

Note that any time you see the ▪ it always represents a topic, even if it is located on a different level.

All board and topics are linked and only topics considered important are included. In most cases, this will be sticky topics.
